PCC newsletter – August 2022

Welcome to my August newsletter.

In this month’s edition, you will find out about my successful Safer Streets Bid, support available for victims of domestic abuse and a call to sign-up to Community Matters.

Keep reading to find out more…

Successful Safer Streets Bid

A staggering £1.7 million of additional funding has been secured to tackle neighbourhood crime, anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls across West Mercia.

In partnership with West Mercia Police, I submitted four bids based on local needs as part of the fourth round of the Government’s Safer Streets initiative.

All four bids were successful and have been match funded, which means the total funding going into the various projects totals £3.76 million.

Some of the money will be targeted in Herefordshire, Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire to tackle local issues. There will also be money put into schemes that cover the whole of West Mercia.

Support is there for victims of domestic abuse

Following a report from Women’s Aid, I want to remind victims of domestic abuse that support is there.

The report, issued by the leading domestic abuse charity, found that the cost of living is making it harder for domestic abuse victims to flee.

I understand the rising cost of living and news about an interest rates rise is going to be causing stress and worry in homes across West Mercia. No one should feel isolated and alone if they are enduring domestic abuse – please don’t suffer in silence.

Support available
Coming together to tackle harm caused by drugs

I am working with West Mercia Police, Worcestershire County Council, Herefordshire Council, local NHS and probation services to tackle the impact drugs have on communities across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

As part of the Government’s ‘From Harm to Hope’ 10 years drugs plan, I will be taking up the role of Senior Responsible Officer for the local Combatting Drugs Partnership that will cover the two counties.

I have also allocated £100,000 of additional funding to support the work, and to make sure the growing harm drugs cause in our community is combated.

Rural crimeIn response to the news that there has been a 15% increase in rural crime in West Mercia, I released a statement.

“I understand the damage rural crime can cause to communities that often feel isolated. In West Mercia we have seen a 15% (238) increase in rural crime from the same month last year.

“To combat the increase in rural crime I continue to fund 5 Rural and Business Crime Officers who work in heart of rural communities across West Mercia. On a daily basis they work with residents and businesses to increase public confidence, promote crime prevention, provide advice and guidance, and work with the public and partners to reduce the crimes that most impact rural and business communities…”

New vehicle-activated sign to tackle speeding on Salwarpe Road

Road safety continues to be at the heart of my work as Commissioner. In a bid to curb speeding on Salwarpe Road in Droitwich Spa, I have funded a new speed monitoring sign to the tune of £2,090.

Following concerns from local Councillor Richard Morris the solar powered vehicle-activated warning sign alerts drivers by flashing up a message to vehicles approaching at a speed higher than 30mph.

National Road Victim Month

The month of August is National Road Victim Month.

As Commissioner, reducing the harm and deaths on our roads is at the heart of my Safer West Mercia Plan.

I am committed to working with partners and communities to change the very sad fact that too many people die or are seriously injured on our roads.

Swapping cars for e-bikes

To reduce the environmental impact of policing and get more visible officers on the streets of West Mercia, I have invested £50,000 in e-bikes since 2021.

A report issued in August from the Association of Police and Crime Commissioner said Police and Crime Commissioners are ‘at the heart of the decarbonisation agenda’.

The electric bikes, I have funded, are benefiting the environment and allowing officers to cover longer distances and access more rural communities.

Welcoming new recruits

On Thursday (4 August), I had the pleasure of meeting 30 new recruits.

The apprentice police officers are set to begin their 3-year Police Constable Degree Apprenticeships with West Mercia Police.

In my speech, I spoke to the new students about the important role I have to help build a safer West Mercia.

I wish all the apprentices good luck on the start of their policing journey!

What’s on at Beoley Village Hall

Hi all,
At Beoley Village Hall on Saturday 10th September we have –
The Joy of Laughter: Silent Film Comedy with live piano and percussion accompaniment.

Thrill to the comedic antics of early film comedy stars, such as Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy in an entertaining evening of mirth and music for the entire family. USA piano star Jeff Barnhart returns to Beoley with a treasure trove of stories and films from the Early Days of cinematic comedy. Car chases, stunts, suspense and romance await you as Jeff weaves his musical magic from scene to scene.  And this year local drummer Graham Smith will be adding a percussion accompaniment too.
Jeff tells us about the background to the films and the actors and then plays music to enhance the silent films – in the style of the old cinema pianists. An unforgettable evening of education, entertainment and above all, LAUGHTER!

The first four years’ events were very entertaining and great fun, with a very high attendance (a sell-out in 2017), but had to be cancelled in 2020, unfortunately. New films and stories every time! Book early to secure your tickets! This event is suitable for all ages from 10 upwards!

Training/Courses/Workshops

Climate Change – Training to make a difference

Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils have embarked on a journey of delivering Carbon Literacy Training to all Staff and Councillors which will put climate action into the hands of everyone. With the increasing threat from climate change on our daily lives, our business, and our local spaces, it is important that all organisations are working to reduce carbon from their day-to-day activities.

The course providers, Carbon Literacy Trust, helps participants to become more aware of how human activity is exacerbating climate change and how we need to react to reduce the carbon and other greenhouse gasses from our atmosphere. It also helps to identify the additional benefits that can result as a by-product of an organisation working in a decarbonised way. We all have a responsibility to act in a way that our partners and stakeholders would approve of, and this is great opportunity to show your commitment to a more sustainable way of managing your organisation.

To find out more or sign up, visit  Home – The Carbon Literacy Project and How It Works – The Carbon Literacy Project. Carbon literacy training is delivered through workplaces, educational institutions and communities and can be online or face to face. Typically, there is a saving of 5-15% per person that is trained for your organisation and staff will commit to delivering on carbon reduction activities at the end of the course to become accredited. To register interest with Carbon Literacy Project email  and tell them why you would like to get involved, what kind of organisation you are, size wise, what you do and your carbon reduction aim.

A Works Update on the M40/M42 Interchange Post-Commonwealth Games

Dear all,

I work for the contractors bmJV that are carrying out the above scheme on behalf of National Highways. Please see an update below.

As you may know, we had taken the decision to temporarily halt our work on the network during the periods up to and immediately after the Commonwealth Games to reduce the potential for additional disruption during a time when traffic was expected to be busier than usual.

Now that the Games are over, we are returning to our work on the scheme, progressing towards the upgrade of the central reservation which will begin this autumn. Until then, we are carrying out a range of enabling works including vegetation clearance, various surveys, drainage, surfacing and vehicle barrier works and the installation of speed cameras.

So we can deliver this work safely and minimise disruption, we’ll need to temporarily close some lanes on the carriageway.

Where possible, we’ll work at night time when the roads are at their quietest. To keep our workforce and motorists safe, we’ll close lanes in 4-kilometre (2.4 miles) sections while we work. Signage will remain in place to inform and remind motorists of all upcoming road closures.

Schedule of closures until 21 December 2022

Day time:

M42 junction 3 to M40 junction 16:

24-hour limited hard shoulders on Mondays to Sundays between 15 August and 10 October 2022

Night time (between 9pm and 6am):

M42 junction 3 to junction 4:

Lanes 1 and 2 on Mondays to Fridays between 31 August and 17 October 2022

M42 junction 3 to M40 junction 16:

Full carriageway on Mondays to Fridays between 10 October and 22 November 2022

M42 junction 3a to junction 4:

West Mercia Police – Economic Crime Unit – monthly bulletin

The Fraud & Scam Bulletin

August  2022

Your monthly update direct from West Mercia Police on the latest scams and frauds

This month’s key message relates to

INVESTMENT FRAUD

What is Financial Investments fraud?

There are many different types of investment fraud. They usually involve criminals contacting people out of the blue and convincing them to invest in schemes or products that are worthless or do not exist. Once the criminals have received payment, they cease contact with the victim.

How to protect yourself from Financial Investment fraud:

Investment opportunities: Don’t be rushed into making an investment. Remember, legitimate organisations will never pressure you into investing on the spot.

Where people have made investments, you should not have to pay money in continually to get money out

.

Fraudsters initially start by saying they need, say, £100 to withdraw the money – then £1,000 – then £10,000 and so it escalates very quickly.

Always seek advice first: Before making significant financial decisions, speak with trusted friends or family members, or seek professional independent advice.
FCA register: Use the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) register to check if the company is regulated by the FCA. If you deal with a firm (or individual) that isn’t regulated, you may not be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) if things go wrong and you lose your money.

What to do if you’ve been a victim of Financial Investment fraud:

You could be targeted again: Fraudsters sometimes re-establish contact with previous victims claiming that they can help them recover lost money, this is just a secondary scam. Hang up on any callers that claim they can get your money back for you.

Identity theft: If you suspect your identity may have been stolen, you can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and follow up on any unexpected or suspicious results.

Legal advice: In many cases of fraud there is a close correlation between what may be considered fraud and the civil tort of deceit and/or breach of contract, for which there are civil litigation options. You should always seek professional legal advice, or contact Citizens Advice to understand your options.

You can also contact the Financial Conduct Authority’s consumer helpline on 0800 111 6768 or report suspicious businesses or individuals by using the reporting form on their website.

Gentle reminder:

Yes, we have put out messages about the WHATSAPP scam before, but the public are still being targeted and losing money. Over £1.5milion has been reported lost in the first half of this year alone.

Please continue to make family members and friends aware of this Scam, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
