Post: Part-time Parish Lengthsman
The modern Lengthsman is a locally employed person who can really make a difference to
the community environment by maintaining roadside verges and drainage and generally
maintaining and raising the standards within the Parish. The role may be expanded to tackle
other small-scale maintenance work.
Appropriate basic training on the hazards of working in the highway and standards of
work to be achieved will be provided.
The post is part-time but involves a flexible approach to working hours, which are approximately 22 hours per month at £11.00 per hour. The initial contract is for one year only, with regular reviews at one month and 3 months, and subsequent 3-month intervals. A review before the completion of 12 months will determine, or otherwise, a further 12-month contract.

Job Description
The Lengthsman will be expected to carry out the following work schedule:
- Clear gully grates
- Dig out blocked gullies
- Clear verge grips
- Clear headwalls
- Rod blocked drains if practical
- Advise landowners & frontagers when their ditches need cleaning. Notify HPM when unsuccessful
- In especially difficult circumstances clear ditches – only with prior agreement of HPM
- Clean dirty signs (except illuminated signs)
- Remove vegetation obstructing signs
- Side out footways to normal width and spread arisings on verge where possible.
- Negotiate with frontagers for them to cut back overhanging vegetation. Notify HPM when unsuccessful. In cases of hardship cut back and dispose of after consultation with the owner
- Litter collection and administration (separately funded by BPC)
- The lengthsman will be required to travel around the parish at short notice
