West Mercia Police – Economic Crime Unit – Fraud & Scam bulleting – July 2022

The Fraud & Scam Bulletin

July  2022

Your monthly update direct from West Mercia Police on the latest scams and frauds

This month promotes the National Phishing Campaign and also features the current and ongoing WhatsApp Scams.

What is Phishing?

‘Phishing’ or ‘smishing’ is when criminals use scam emails, text messages or phone calls to trick their victims. Whether it’s an email asking you to ‘verify’ your bank account details, or a text message claiming you’ve been in close contact with someone that’s got COVID-19, the goal is usually the same – to trick you into revealing personal and financial information.

The most impersonated organisations in phishing emails reported last year were the NHS, HMRC and gov.uk.

Protect yourself

Fake emails and texts can be difficult to spot as criminals are always getting better at creating genuine-looking messages.

Here’s some practical advice you can follow when it comes to dealing with phishing scams:

  • If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly. Don’t use the numbers or address in the message – use the details from that organisation’s official website. Remember, your bank (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email.
  • If you think an email could be a scam, you can report it by forwarding the email to: . Always send emails that feel suspicious, even if you’re not certain they’re a scam – they can be checked
  • Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.
  • If you’ve lost money or provided personal information as a result of a phishing scam, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

WHATSAPP SCAMS

This month there has been a rise again in WhatsApp scams where the suspect is pretending to be the victim’s son/daughter and requesting payments made to their bank account.

The suspect applies pressure saying:

1.    They cannot take the call (when the victim tries to call them) as they are using a friend’s phone

2.    The suspect will say their “phone” has been dropped down the toilet and they cannot access their online banking, so to send the payment to a friend’s bank account

3.    They apply further pressure by saying the money is for an unexpected bill or a debt that needs paying urgently

The suspect may then make repeated requests to have the money transferred quickly.

So do not attempt to call back the “friend’s” number provided, but use another number saved to your phone to double check with that relative before handing over any money.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING SCAMMED

OR DO NOT RECOGNISE THE CONTACT

  • STOP: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.

  • CHALLENGE: Could it be fake? It’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

  • PROTECT: Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam

and report it to Action Fraud

If you’ve fallen for a scam, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via actionfraud.police.uk.

Scam Text messages can be forwarded to 7726 to help phone providers take early action and block numbers that generate spam on their networks.

M42 junction 6 update: weekend road closure

Advance notice of road closure:
M42 central reservation hardening

As part of our work to upgrade the M42 at junction 6, we’re creating a new junction (5a) and installing a new dual carriageway between this junction and Clock Interchange.

To create the new M42 junction 5a we’ll need to install 2 new bridges across the M42. In preparation for this we need to harden the central reservation around the area of the new junction before the structures are moved into place later this year.

To complete this hardening work safely, we’ll work in the following phases:

  • The M42 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junction 6 (National Exhibition Centre) and 5 (Solihull) from 22:00 on Friday 10 June to 05:00 on Monday 13 June.
  • During the daytime, two lanes will be open on the southbound side of the carriageway from 05:00 to 22:00.
  • The northbound carriageway will also be reduced to two lanes from 22:00 on Friday 10 June to 06:00 on Monday 13 June but will continue to remain open throughout the weekend.

When the road is closed we’ll put in place a clearly signed diversion route as shown on the map below. We expect these lane closures to cause delays for motorists travelling along the M42. Please plan ahead and allow additional time for your journeys. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience you may experience during our upcoming work.

To find out more information, please visit our project webpage at https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/west-midlands/m42-junction-6/

·         your bank

·          the police

·          a delivery or utility company

·          communication service provider

·         a government department such as HMRC

·          someone you trust such as a friend or family member.

These scams often begin with a phone call, text, message or email that appears to be from a trusted organisation or person.

A criminal might say your bank account is at risk and ask you to move your money to a ‘safe account’.

They might get in touch impersonating a police officer, saying your money needs to be analysed as part of a police investigation.

They may also get in touch via social media, sending you messages or by creating posts. When criminals impersonate a friend or family member, they often invent reasons to ask for money, such as being stranded overseas or urgently needing to pay a debt, rent or a bill.

Criminals use many tactics to trick you including;

·         including ‘spoofing’ which makes their call, text, DM or email appear genuine.

·          These messages will often lead to a website that is made to look legitimate using another tactic called ‘cloning’.

·          Cloned websites often look almost identical to the real website of a trusted organisation.

·         Phone numbers and sender ID’s can also be cloned to make a scam message appear genuine.

·         Criminals also use a tactic called social engineering to groom and manipulate you into transferring money or divulging your personal and financial details.

In some cases, criminals try to dupe you by sending couriers to collect your cards, cash, PINs or valuable items in person.

HOW TO SPOT AN IMPERSONATION SCAM

1.      You receive a call, text, email or DM with an urgent request for your personal or financial information, to make a payment or move money

2.      You receive a message from a friend or family member requesting financial assistance often with an urgent reason such as them being stranded overseas or requiring medical help

3.      You are pressured to act immediately. The caller pressures you to rush causing a level of panic.  Texts or messages may include a ‘hook’ to grab your attention, for example the criminal might say your money is at risk and you need to act to save it, or suggest you will get a reward if you do what they ask

4.      You’re asked to transfer money to another account for ‘safe-keeping’

5.      You’re asked to purchase high value goods/vouchers to cover the cost of fines. They might also ask you pay a bill for tax or utilities or provide financial details to receive a rebate

6.      You’re asked for cash or a payment as part of a police investigation or told money in your account needs to be analysed as part of an ongoing investigation

The sender’s email address is ever so slightly different to that of the genuine sender
